‘Oh, my dear heart, yes.’
Jenny heaved a sigh of pure happiness, and then: ‘Eduard, your parents—do you suppose they’ll mind? Will they like me?’
‘They loved you. They couldn’t understand why I hadn’t snapped you up weeks ago.’
‘Well, why didn’t you?’
He smiled down at her, pulling her closer. ‘I thought I’d told you; I’m too old and arrogant and…’
‘Fiddlesticks,’ said Jenny, ‘you’re exactly my idea of a perfect husband.’ She kissed him to prove it. ‘We’d better go and tell Aunt Bess. She will be surprised.’
They started up the staircase. ‘No, she won’t, my darling. I told her I was going to marry you.’
‘Oh—did you? But I might not have wanted to.’
They had achieved the top of the narrow staircase by now. ‘Then I should have persuaded you.’
‘How?’
‘Like this, my little love.’ He bent his head to kiss her once more. Presently she said: ‘Eduard—dear Eduard, there are a lot of questions…’
‘Nothing that can’t wait for an answer, my darling. This, on the other hand, can’t wait either.’
And Jenny, kissed into silence, happily agreed.
