‘No, it’s not, my darling. You see, I love you. I’ve loved you for quite a while now. Just when I have despaired of you ever loving me, you called me dear Thomas.’
‘Oh, you are, you are. I must have been blind or something. I think I’ve loved you for a long time, too, only we both thought the other one didn’t, didn’t we?’
Mr Tait-Bullen listened to this muddled speech with delight. ‘Dear love, you couldn’t have put it more clearly.’
He bent and kissed her in a way which proved how right she was. ‘Were you running away?’ he asked, and bent to kiss her again. ‘Because if you try to do so again, remember to take your driving licence with you.’
‘I’ll never do it again, Thomas. Thomas, you do love me? Really love me?’
‘My dearest love, I would not wish to live without you.’
Claudia kissed him. ‘We have the rest of our lives together,’ she said, ‘and we’ll come here whenever we can, won’t we? And be happy together—with Harvey, of course.’
‘And a handful of sons and daughters, my darling. Harvey will need young company...’
‘He has us.’
‘Yes, and I have you, too, Claudia.’
She peered up into his face. The bland calm wasn’t there anymore; she saw the man she loved, the man who had been there all the time.
‘We’re going home now,’ said Mr Tait-Bullen.
