  case on the pavement beside it, will you?

  ' He took an arm from Beth and felt in a pocket and handed the man some

  coins.

  As the man went away Beth said: "Someone will take it, you know.

  ' "We'll buy whatever you need tomorrow.

  ' She stared up at him.

  "But what about tonight?

  ' He went on speaking as though he hadn't heard her.

  We'll have a meal on the way and I must telephone the hospital and get

  someone to take over for a day or two.

  ' asked Beth in an excited little voice.

  Betty Ne els spent her childhood and youth in Devonshire before

  training as a nurse and midwife.

  She was an army nursing sister during the war, married a Dutchman, and

  subsequently lived in Holland for fourteen years.

  She now lives with her husband in Dorset and has a daughter and

  grandson.

  Her hobbies are reading, animals, old buildings and, of course,

  writing.

  Betty started to write on retirement from nursing, incited by a lady in

  a library bemoaning the lack of romantic novels.

  She has since become one of Mills & Boon's most prolific and well-loved
